Botox Treatments

Botox (or Botulinum toxin) temporarily inhibits muscle movement, stopping the constant motions that become etched into your face as a wrinkle or crease.

Botox is injected into muscles, where it blocks nerve impulses to those tissues. As the muscle cannot contract fully, the wrinkles are forced to ease and relax too. As Botox works its way out of the body, its effects begin to dwindle, but the fine lines and wrinkles that were targeted will lessen over time as the Botox teaches the muscles to relax.

Botox is administered via a thin needle that injects the serum into the specific muscles that is being targeted. The injections take about 10 minutes, and you should have no downtime afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions, tips and what to bring...

What this treatment entails

Does it hurt?

Any injection can hurt, but the needles used for Botox injections are very thin, so pain is usually minimal. If necessary, the area can be numbed with a topical anesthetic cream or cold pack 10-20 minutes before the injections are given, so you may not feel much pain, if any

How long does it last?

Normally you would see improvement within a few days. Botox requires two to four days for it to attach to the nerve ending that would normally stimulate the muscle to contract. The maximum effect usually occurs at about 10-14 days. Therefore, whatever effect is obtained two weeks after the injections should be considered the maximum effect that is going to occur. Botox will usually last between three to six months, depending on the dose used and the speed at which the body breaks it down.

To lessen the chances of bruising, it is recommended that patients stay away from anti-inflammatory medicines as well as any medication that has aspirin in it prior to the treatment. Botox is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breast feeding.

Is Botox safe?

Botox has been used safely and successfully in ophthalmology for over 20 years and for over 16 years in dermatology. No long-term side effects have been attributed to the use of Botox.
